For this project, we were asked to create a dust jacket book cover while only given the title and the subtitle. The only limitation we were given was that we weren't allowed to use images directly related to the title and we could only use images to create the dust jacket. I chose the title, It's Alive: How Biology Will Create The Monsters Of Our Nightmares. The first thing I thought of when I saw this title was Spiderman and how his DNA was mixed with that of a spiders. Because of this, I was inspired to use spiders as my main theme here. I used the spiders to create the heart and I also put them moving in a path that is the shape of a double helix to remind the audience that this is done with DNA. I used a separate spider to merge with the human heart to give the effect that the two species were joining together. My color choices were mainly red and black because those are the colors of a black widow with its red hourglass symbol.
I went through a few ideas on how to communicate that the spider DNA was merging with the human DNA so I would love to ask if you think that was communicated? Overall, I enjoyed creating this dust jacket and learning a lot about photoshop along the way.
